Pleasant Hill Water Hardness: What It Does to a Miele
Pleasant Hill tap water is hard enough to shorten the life of a Miele. Not dramatically, not overnight, but measurably — and scale is the single most common preventable failure we find in kitchens across Pleasant Hill, Concord and Walnut Creek.
What comes out of the tap here
Pleasant Hill is served by the Contra Costa Water District, drawing from the Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta. On the standard hardness scale, soft water is below 75 ppm calcium carbonate, moderately hard runs 75–150, hard runs 150–300, and anything above 300 is very hard. Concord — same CCWD distribution zone as Pleasant Hill — tests around 394 ppm total dissolved solids.
That puts local water in the very hard category. Every appliance in the house that heats water is depositing calcium carbonate on a heating surface, continuously, from the day it was installed.
Why it matters more on a Miele than on a cheap appliance
Scale is a thermal insulator. A heating element carrying roughly one millimetre of deposit loses about ten percent of its thermal efficiency; at full accumulation, energy consumption climbs twenty to thirty percent and element life drops sharply.
On a mass-market appliance that reaches its natural end in eight years, scale rarely gets the chance to be the deciding factor. A Miele is built to run for twenty. Over that span, scale is not a footnote — it is often the thing that decides whether the appliance reaches year twenty at all.
Dishwashers: the salt reservoir is not optional here
Miele G 7000 dishwashers contain a built-in ion-exchange water softener that regenerates using dishwasher salt. Many owners never fill it, either because nobody explained it or because the machine seems to run fine without.
With CCWD water it is not optional. Fill the reservoir, and set the machine’s water hardness level to 5 or above rather than leaving the factory default. Under normal household use the salt needs topping up every four to eight weeks.
What happens when it is skipped: cloudy glassware first, then white film on the interior, then scale in the circulation pump housing and on the flow-through heater. By the time a fault code appears, the deposit has usually been building for a year or more.
Washing machines: check the hardness setting
Miele W1 washers adjust TwinDos detergent dosing according to a water hardness setting stored in the machine. That setting frequently sits at the factory default, which assumes softer water than Pleasant Hill actually has — so the machine under-doses relative to local conditions and compensating by adding more detergent manually creates a different problem.
Correcting the setting takes a minute and costs nothing. It is worth doing on any W1 that has never been checked.
Coffee machines: descale at 100 cycles, not 200
Miele CVA, CM 6 and CM 7 machines schedule AutoDescale on an interval calibrated for average water. On CCWD water, run it at roughly every hundred brew cycles instead of the default two hundred.
The calcification indicator appears before boiler damage occurs, which is the entire point of it. Ignoring the prompt for a few weeks is recoverable. Ignoring it for months is how a boiler and a pump become a single expensive repair.
When descaling is no longer the answer
There is a point past which a descale cycle cannot fix the problem, and recognising it saves money. The signs are consistent: the machine prompts to descale again within days of a completed descale routine; heating takes noticeably longer than it used to; or a flow or heating fault code appears shortly after descaling.
All three usually mean deposit has reached the level sensor, the flow meter or the heating element itself — components that need to be serviced or replaced rather than rinsed. Continuing to run descale cartridges at that stage postpones the visit without changing the outcome.
Is a whole-house softener worth it?
For a kitchen with several Miele appliances, often yes — though that is a plumbing decision rather than an appliance one, and we do not sell them. What we can say from service records is that homes on softened water show markedly less scale-driven wear on heating components, and their appliances arrive for repair with fundamentally different problems.
FAQ
Does hard water void a Miele warranty?
No. But damage caused by neglected maintenance — a scaled boiler on a machine whose descale prompts were ignored for a year — is maintenance, not a manufacturing defect, and is assessed accordingly. Keeping up with descaling and salt is what keeps that conversation simple.
Can I use vinegar instead of Miele descaler?
We do not recommend it. Vinegar attacks seals and aluminium components that the manufacturer’s formulation is designed to leave alone, and the concentration is not controlled. On a machine of this cost the saving is not worth the risk.
My dishwasher has never had salt in it. Is the damage already done?
Depends how long and how much it runs. Under three years, filling the reservoir and correcting the hardness setting usually stops the progression. Beyond that, it is worth having the pump housing and heater inspected during a routine visit — deposit that has already formed does not dissolve on its own.
