Miele T1 Dryer F55: Maximum Drying Time Exceeded
F55 means the program ran out its maximum permitted time and the laundry still didn’t read as dry. The T1 caps drying time as a safety and sanity limit; hitting the cap says either the load was unreasonable or the machine can’t sense dryness anymore.
Rule out the innocent causes first
- Under-spun laundry. A washer spin below ~1000–1200 RPM hands the dryer a swamp. If your W1 recently started leaving loads wetter, the washer may be the patient (see F53).
- Oversized or mixed loads. One king duvet reads “wet” at the sensor bars long after the rest is dry.
- Coated moisture sensors. The two metal bars inside the drum lip get filmed by fabric-softener residue and read dry laundry as… nothing. Wipe them with a damp cloth and a drop of vinegar.
Retry with a normal, well-spun load after those. Most F55s end here.
When it’s the machine
Persistent F55 on sane loads points to the moisture-sensing circuit (bars, wiring, contact to the electronics) or to genuinely weak drying performance — which loops back to airflow (F66 territory) or heat-pump output. We test the sensing circuit directly and measure temperature rise across the process path, so the answer is a reading, not a shrug.

Is F55 harmful to the machine?
The time cap exists to prevent harm. But chronically long cycles are an efficiency and wear signal worth acting on.
Dryer sheets vs softener — do they matter here?
Both leave sensor film; sheets are slightly kinder. Either way, an occasional bar wipe keeps the sensing honest.
