Miele T1 Dryer F66: Restricted Airflow
F66 is the T1’s thermal protection reacting to restricted airflow — the most common fault code on Miele heat-pump dryers, full stop. The process air can’t move enough heat through the drum and exchanger, temperatures climb where they shouldn’t, and the machine aborts to protect itself.
The blockage ladder
Lint stops at four stations, in order:
- Door lint filters — the two you (should) clean every load.
- Plinth filter — the pull-out filter cassette behind the lower flap.
- Heat-exchanger fins — where lint that beat the filters compacts into felt. A household vacuum reaches the surface; the mat lives deeper.
- Airways and fan — the ducting inside the machine.
Stations 1–2 are yours; when F66 persists past clean filters, stations 3–4 are the job, and that’s disassembly-level cleaning.
What to do
Clean both door filters and the plinth filter exactly per the flap diagram, dry any washed filter fully before refitting, reduce the load, and run again. F66 on a small load with clean filters means the exchanger mat has arrived — book the deep clean. In closet installs around Pleasant Hill (warm recirculated air, long run times) we see this at roughly the 2–4 year mark depending on load habits.
Two things not to do: don’t run repeated cycles “pushing through” F66 — thermal stress is cumulative — and don’t jet water into the exchanger fins; bent fins turn a cleaning into a part.

Does F66 mean the heat pump is failing?
Almost never by itself. But chronic F66 running causes premature component stress — which is why the deep clean is worth doing promptly.
