Miele Oven F23: Pyrolysis Didn't Reach Temperature
F23 logs when the self-clean (pyrolysis) program can’t drive the cavity to its target temperature in the allotted time. Pyrolysis runs the oven far hotter than any cooking mode — it’s the most demanding thing an H 7000 ever does, which is why marginal components fail there first while dinner still cooks fine.
The causes, in field order
- Heavy soil load. Sounds trivial; isn’t. Thick grease deposits absorb enormous heat while burning off. Miele’s own guidance: remove large residue before pyrolysis. An F23 on a badly soiled cavity with an otherwise healthy oven is common.
- Door seal past its prime. Pyrolysis magnifies any seal leak; heat bleeds, target unreachable. Check the gasket for compressed, torn or hardened sections.
- Weak heating circuit. An element (or its relay path) delivering less than rated power cooks food acceptably but can’t summit pyrolysis temperature. This is the version that needs us.
- Temperature-sensing drift — related territory to F31.
What to do
Cool-down, remove heavy residue and anything left in the cavity (racks per manual), inspect the gasket visually, and run pyrolysis once more. Second F23 → stop repeating it; each attempt is hours at extreme temperature for no gain. We measure element draw and sensor response against spec, and check the door-seal system properly.

Cooking asks for a fraction of pyrolysis power. Self-clean is the stress test; it finds weakness first.
Is it OK to just stop using self-clean?
You can, but F23’s cause doesn’t age well — a weakening element or seal eventually shows up at Thanksgiving instead.
The oven smells strongly during pyrolysis — related?
Strong smoke means heavy soil burning, the same thing that causes cause #1. Ventilate and reduce soil next time.
