Miele Oven F31: Temperature Sensor Fault

F31 means the cavity temperature sensor is reading open, shorted or implausible. The H 7000 regulates everything — bake, roast, pyrolysis, even the cooling-fan logic — from that sensor. When it can’t be trusted, the oven either compensates badly or refuses to run.

How it announces itself

The polite version arrives early: bakes browning unevenly, recipes suddenly needing “five more minutes,” a roast probe disagreeing with the set temperature. The blunt version is F31 on the display and an oven that won’t heat at all. Between the two, drift can hide for months — which is why “my oven bakes differently lately” is a sentence we take seriously on service calls in Pleasant Hill and Lafayette.

Owner side: verify, don’t fix

There’s no user access to the sensor circuit, but you can build a useful case file: put a decent standalone oven thermometer in the center, set 350 °F, and note the stabilized reading and swing. A 15–25 °F steady offset with normal swing smells like drift; wild swings or a no-heat condition with F31 is a hard fault. Either way the fix is a measured one.

A single F31 immediately after a power outage deserves one breaker-level reset before anything else — control glitches happen.

The repair

We measure the sensor’s resistance curve against Miele’s table at multiple temperatures and inspect the harness path (heat-brittled insulation near the cavity is a repeat offender on high-mileage ovens). Outcome: sensor replacement, harness repair, or — least common — control-side work. Sensor jobs are single-visit with parts stocked for H 6000/H 7000.
