Miele W1 Washer F20: Heating Fault

F20 means the W1 commanded heat and the water temperature didn’t respond. US W1 washers are cold-fill and heat internally — so a dead heating path doesn’t just make washes cold, it stalls programs that wait for temperature (Cottons 60/90, Sanitize) and eventually logs F20.

Why it happens on CCWD water

The suspects, in field order:

  1. Heater element scaled or open. Scale jackets the element; hot spots crack the sheath; the element eventually opens or leaks to ground.
  2. NTC temperature sensor drift. A lying sensor makes the control think heating failed (or, nastier, overshoots quietly for months first).
  3. Heater relay / control path on the electronics.
  4. Ground-fault trips: if your laundry GFCI pops on heated cycles specifically, the element’s insulation is breaking down — that pattern is diagnostic gold, tell us.

Anything DIY here?

Honestly, no — this is live 120/240 V measurement inside the machine. What you can do: run a cold-wash program to confirm the rest of the machine works (it will), note whether GFCI trips correlate with hot cycles, and skip the “replace the element blind from a YouTube video” route — half of F20s are the sensor or relay, and W1 teardown for the element is not a gentle job.

Clothes wash fine on Quick — is that consistent with F20?

Yes. Short cool programs don’t demand the heater. The fault surfaces on temperature-holding cycles.

Is a scaled element dangerous?

The machine’s protection handles it, but insulation-breakdown elements that trip GFCIs should be repaired promptly, not lived with.

Will Miele descaler fix F20?

It slows the next failure. Once F20 logs, the component that failed still needs measurement and likely replacement — then descaling becomes maintenance again.
